History

The Department of Public Administration and Local Government, University of Nigeria, Nsukka started as a centre created by the Federal Government for the training of low and middle level manpower for the third tier of government – the Local government, in 1979. The programme saw to the emergence of highly professionalized career officials at the Local Government level. The catchment States covered by the Department are Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, Enugu, Kogi Imo and Rivers.

Now a full-fledged Department, it offers the following programmes:

  • Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Public Administration and Local Government.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Local Government Studies (B.Sc);
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Administration Studies (B.Sc);
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration and Local government (PGD);
  • Master Degree in Public Administration (MPA);
  • Master of Science Degree in Public Administration (M.Sc);
  • Doctor of Public Administration (DPA) and
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Public Administration (Ph.D).

Our undergraduate programmes are designed to produce world-class graduates who can favourably compete with their counterparts all over the world. Through the courses, researches and teachings that make up these programmes, students acquaint themselves with knowledge and skills in Public Sector Management, Public Policy, the Management of Public Finance, Public Programmes/Projects, Human Resource Management, Development Administration etc.

The Masters and Doctorate programmes in the Department are fashioned to help meet the challenges of shaping and delivering effective public services in a climate of continuous change, as well as equipping one with skills and understanding needed to operate effectively in an increasingly competitive environment.

The Department is loaded with academics who have very impressive reputation for research and whose ideas are published around the world. More so, our flexible programmes, teaching and excellent resources are designed to meet the needs of those studying full-time and busy professionals aiming to manage part-time study with full-time employment. More importantly, everyone is a part of a diverse student body working in a very friendly and intellectually stimulating environment.

Very regularly, the Department is engaged in high profile training workshops and retreats for different cadres of Local Government Staff, Public Servants, Political Office Holders, Civil Servants and Key Officers in the Private Sector.
